Having dehydrated, dry, acne-prone and sensitive skin, I always thought it was due to the lack of hydration. However, despite being careful on my diet, drinking at least or more than 2.5 litres of water a day and pampering myself with hydrating masks, things can be good for a week and then worse the next week. 😦 My esthetician, then, told me to incorporate facial oil into my routine which I was being very sceptical of it in the beginning. However, wanting get my healthy glowing skin back, I decided to give it a go. My oh my, I was intrigued with the results. I did some research and I thought it will be good to share here what I have discovered about getting the oil and water balance of our skin right.
Why do you need both oil and water?
Our body is composed of 70% of water. We need to stay hydrated to keep our skin supple and youthful but do you know that the oil that our skin secretes naturally, a.k.a sebum, helps to maintain a healthy skin barrier too? Of course, excessive sebum is problematic which we cannot really do much about it when it is due to genetics or hormones. Nevertheless, we need both water moisture and oil moisture for our skin to function properly.
What happens when your skin is lack of oil moisture?
Unlike water, your skin produces oil naturally. It is for maintaining the skin’s elasticity, moisture and strength. It also acts as a protective barrier that locks all the moisture in. Without oil moisture, your skin will become dry and sensitised. This is due to the disruption of the skin barrier which leads to moisture loss. You might also experience itchiness and redness of the skin.
What happens when your skin is lack of water moisture?
Your skin will be dehydrated. Imagine a raisin, it has fairly low water content and is not as plump and smooth as a grape. Thus, dehydrated skin can cause flakiness, fine lines and wrinkles. You will experience a tight feeling from deep within even though you might have an oily skin. Dehydrated skin is also more prone to have congested pores, trapping all the oil underneath which leads to acne breakouts and blackheads.
How do you get it right?
Water and oil balance does not mean getting the ratio right. That will be too difficult and stressful. Instead, it refers to not lacking of the two factors. Your skin needs both to have healthy and glowing skin. Here are some tips to get the balance right:
- Drink enough water. As our bodies do not produce water on its own, keeping it hydrated is the key. Cassey from Blogilates has the formula and water challenge here on how much water you should drink daily based on your body weight.
- Use a gentle or hydrating cleanser that does not strip of all of the natural oils of your skin.
- Do not over exfoliate which I have shared in one of my post. Once or twice a week with physical OR chemical exfoliation is sufficient.
- Add a hydrating serum or essence to your routine, especially on exfoliation day.
- Sheet mask at least twice a week.
- Incorporate facial oil into your routine even though you have oily skin… I know, especially facial oil that is higher in linoeic acid (omega-6), eg. rosehip oil, evening primrose oil, hempseed oil and calendula oil. I have been using one for a while now and cannot wait to share my review and experience. Stay tuned!
Everyone is different. Genetics, hormones, diet and temperature (the weather) play big roles too. It is time to listen to your skin. Some products might work on someone else’s skin but not yours. Two to three products might be enough for you while others might benefit from the famous 10 steps skincare routine. It is all about understanding about your own skin and be discipline in taking care both internally and externally 🙂
