The Water Bank Series by Laneige has always been very popular in the K-beauty world and they have recently launched their newly formulated Water Bank Essence. I have loved using the Older version (Water Bank Essence_EX) which has been discontinued so I decided to give their new recipe a try. There are two new types of products for customers to choose from, Hydro for oily to combination skin and Moisture for combination to dry skin. I, of course, went with the Moisture recipe for my dry skin. So, here is my review after using for about 2 weeks.
About the Product
Laneige Water Bank Moisture Essence, 70ml, RM 179
A hydrating essence to fortify skin barrier and provide a fully-hydrated healthy look. It is enriched with Green mineral water which is made of mineral water and vegetable infused water that has been extracted using the Ocean Brew process. These vegetable ingredients make it different from its old version. It also gives a water zipper effect which helps to prevent evaporation of moisture from the skin.
Here are the key points of this product:
Water/ Aqua, Propanediol, Gylcerin, Squalene, Hexyldecyl Myristoyl Methylaminopropionate, Isostearyl Neopentanoate, Myristyl Myristate, PCA Dimethicone, Sea water, Saccharide Isomerate, Polyacrylate Crosspolymer-6, Tromethamine, Glyceryl Caprylate, Carbomer, Butylene Glycol, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Ethylhexyglycerin, 1,2-Hexanediol, Fragrance, Disodium EDTA, Chenopodium Quinoa Seed Extract, Magnesium Sulfate, Calcium Chloride, Citric Acid, Sodium Citrate, Phenoxyethanol, T-Butyl Alcohol, Cynara Scolymus (Artichoke) Leaf Extract, Maganese Sulgate, Zinc Sulfate, Lecithin, Brassica Oleracea Gemmifera (Brussels Sprouts) Extract, Phaseolus Lunatus (Green Bean) Seed Extract, Tocopherol, Lepidium Sativim Sprout (Water Cress) Extract, Ascorbyl Glucoside.
I am happy to see squalene at the top of list as it is a precursor to synthesise cholesterol in our skin which I mentioned in my blog here. I have also featured Artichoke extract for its antioxidant properties in my previous blog. Other than that, it is interesting to see hydrating ingredients from vegetables or food like quinoa seed, lima beans, brussels sprouts and water cress even though they can only be found at bottom of the list.
Blue glass bottle with a pump and a cover to minimise contamination. I think they have improved the cover as it locks more tightly compared to the previous version. I had always found the bottle uncapped in my cabin bag after taking a flight.
It is not surprising that this product has a strong distinct smell as fragrance is found quite high on the list! It smells very different from its previous version. It has a sweet floral scent but it does not contain floral extracts. At first, I felt it was quite overwhelming but after using it for some time, I got used to it and actually find it quite therapeutic after a long tiring day at work.
The closest I can describe it as is… Air bandung (rose syrup drink). My fellow Malaysian readers would know what this is 😀
With the price I pay, the texture does not disappoint me. Its consistency is thicker than water but thinner than a lotion… if you know what I mean. To compare with its previous version, this is definitely more liquid-y.
My overall view
Despite the strong fragrance, this product really hydrates my skin from within. As I work in the pharmacy with the AC on all day, I’ve experienced less dry or scaly patches on my skin ever since. My skin absorbs it very well and it feels really hydrating. A hydrated skin creates a great canvas for my makeup too!
Any difference with the Hydro Essence?
I have also tried the mini sample for Hydro essence. It looks and smells the same. The only difference I can tell is that this feels a bit more lightweight. The ingredients are slightly different too. This contains kale, beetroot and garden cress instead.🥗
How do I use this? I use this at the 3rd step of my skincare routine (day & night), which is after cleanser and toner. 2 pumps are needed for my face. After that, I lock all the goodness with a moisturiser.💦
Will I recommend? Yes, especially for dehydrated skin (your skin still feels dry even after using a heavy moisturiser) or those who have dry, scaly patches. I rate this 4.5/5.
Will I repurchase? Yes. Although it is more on the pricy side, I feel it is worth the price as it delivers what it claims.
